Reverse Beanie: Free Pattern

This is a super quick and fun beanie that has the added benefit of being two hats in one! Spice it up with a fur pom pom, make a pom pom with your leftover yarn, or just leave it plain. The hat is designed to fit on your 16" circulars right up until bind off so you don't have to fuss with DPNs or Magic Loop technique(unless you want to). This also means it's quicker to finish. You can knit it up in just an hour or two!! I love Lion Brand Hometown USA for almost all my bulky projects because it's soft, doesn't split during knitting, and it super budget-friendly.

Materials:

Approximately 75-90 yds of Super BulkyYarn (Size 6) (I used Lion Brand Hometown USA)

US size 10.5 /6.5 mm circular needle, 16” long, AND US size 11 /8 mm circular needle, 16” long (or sizes needed to obtain gauge)

Tapestry needle

Stitch markers

Gauge:

5 stitches and 7 rows = 2x2”

Abbreviations:

K - knit

P - purl

PM - place marker

RM - remove marker

Sl2-k1-p2sso - slip 2 stitches as if to knit at the same time, k1, pass the two slipped stitches over the knitted stitch together. This is a double centered decrease.

Brim: (Using US size 10.5/6.5 mm needles)

Cast on 40 stitches, join for working in the round, PM at beginning of the round.

R1-6: (K1, P1) repeat across

Body and Crown: (Using US size 11/8 mm needles)

R7-26: (k1, p3) repeat across

R27: RM, sl p from end of previous round back to left needle, work sl2-k1-p2sso, PM, (p1, sl2-k1-p2sso) repeat to last 2 stitches, p1, k1

R28, (p1, k1) repeat across

Finishing:

Cut the yarn leaving a long tail. Thread tail onto tapestry needle. Slip stitches off the knitting needles onto the tapestry needle and run them through with the long tail. Cinch all the stitches up tightly to close the top. Knot the yarn tightly and weave the tail through one of the ribbing lines to make it as invisible as you can so as to keep the hat reversible. Weave in cast on tail.

Notes:

While sl1-k1-p2sso is a little more complex, it is absolutely essential to the reversibility of the hat and for maintaining all the ribbing without slanting it to the left or right.

Attach a fur pom pom, a tag, or make your own pom pom from the leftover yarn.
